Scroll is pleased to present Entangled Roots, a two-person exhibition of new works exploring notions of memory by London-based artists Kayoon Anderson and Sammi Lynch.

Entangled Roots entwines Lynch's lyrical terrains with Anderson's intimate vignettes, where roots grow and take hold, building both a literal and metaphorical foundation of human connection. Looking to memory as a catalyst, Anderson and Lynch explore the symbiotic relationships between people and their natural and built environments.

Kayoon Anderson’s oil paintings depict simple and imagined spaces that pay homage to her cultural heritage and memory, telling a uniquely personal visual language spanning both time and geography. Starting with personal or family photos, she begins digitally collaging, weaving in images pulled from her memories of Korea, such as her grandmother’s house and places from childhood, mixing these elements with simple geometries and patterns to build a fictional world that plays with naturalistic space not set in any one time or place. Anderson’s compositions are grounded in past memories and places that hold meaning to her, blended with her British and Korean heritage emulated through texture, color, and pattern. Nodding to her previous studies in architecture, Anderson builds domestic scenes that bring together the multicultural moments of her past.

Sammi Lynch’s artistic practice explores notions of memory and place, using the natural world as a cipher for human nature and emotion. She begins with pastel drawings from life, serving as the material to develop and translate into painting and printmaking. Emphasizing space, light, and texture, Lynch’s work expresses lived experiences of the environment. She repeatedly returns to the same sites to make drawings, noting how her emotions and observations vary according to seasonal shifts and her personal experiences. Lynch’s landscapes, with their expressive brushwork and bold use of color, recall places that feel both geographically specific and universally shared.

Kayoon Anderson (b. 1997) was born in Seoul, Korea and is currently based in London. Anderson received her degree in architecture at the University of Cambridge, and then attended Heatherly School of Fine Art and City & Guilds of London Art School. She has exhibited with Mall Galleries, London; and EDJI Gallery, Brussels, among others. In 2023, Anderson received the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Emerging Artist Prize. This is her first exhibition in the United States.
